"Unlock PDF without password" is one of the most-searched PDF requests, and the honest answer depends on which of the two PDF protection types your file uses:
Owner restrictions only. The PDF opens and reads normally, but printing is greyed out, text cannot be copied, or form fields refuse edits. There is no open password at all — just permission flags that PDF readers obey.
This tool removes those flags instantly, with no password: drop the file, get the unrestricted copy. Bank statements, invoices, e-tickets and government forms are very often locked exactly this way.
Open (user) password. The PDF demands a password before showing anything. Its contents are encrypted with AES — without the password the data is mathematically unreadable, and no honest online tool can "crack" it.
If you know the password, this tool removes it permanently: enter it once and the unlocked copy never asks again. If the password is truly lost, no unlock service can help — be wary of any site claiming otherwise.
Either way, unlocking is for documents you are entitled to use: your own files, or files shared with you that you need to print, archive, annotate or merge with other PDFs. Many tools — including our PDF merger and PDF signer — cannot process encrypted files, so removing the lock first is a routine step.
A locked PDF is usually locked because it is sensitive — a payslip, a bank statement, a contract, a medical record. Yet the popular online unlockers (Smallpdf, iLovePDF, PDF2Go and others) work by uploading your confidential document, and often its password, to their servers, processing it there and sending it back. You are trusting an unauditable third party with exactly the file someone considered worth encrypting. Free tiers add insult: daily task caps, queues and sign-up walls.

For the everyday cases this tool is built for — yes. Removing protection from your own documents, or from files legitimately sent to you (an invoice you must archive, a statement you must print, a form you must fill), is the normal exercise of your rights over a copy you lawfully possess. Businesses do it constantly: restricted PDFs break printing workflows, document management systems and accessibility tools like screen readers.
What this tool deliberately does not do is "crack" encryption. A PDF that you cannot open at all is protected by real AES cryptography, and the password is required by mathematics, not by policy. Circumventing protection on documents you have no rights to use is illegal in most jurisdictions — and technically impossible here anyway. That honesty is your guarantee the tool is safe to have in your workflow.
